Thank the Moll! It really does work.

A new logo for Phil Baines? A new logo for Phil Baines?

Cameron Moll, of Zeldman fame, has been letting us into how he produces that Wicked Worn Look. Thanks Moll!

And You know what? It really does work.

What I found interesting is that Moll's article is written with Photoshop in mind, but I was able to produce the same effect with Fireworks. This is down to the tools he uses being the most simple of tools within most graphic programs. So, maybe you should give it a go to?

On another note..

As you may or may not have noticed, I have added Graphic Design into the topic list.

From now on, my web development posts are going to fit into more elaborate topics, because web development just encompasses too much, to wrap it up under one label.

Whitespace Logo Contest

Whitespace 2 : 82k. Whitespace 2 : 82k.

Paul Scrivens is holding a Logo Contest for his site. I would love to enter his Version 2 contest, but I never have the time. This logo contest though appealed to me as soon as I read about it. I came up with some ideas in my head yesterday, and started drawing some of them down last night.

These two logos, are only two of about five that I have come up with. I think that Whitespace 2 is my favorite so far. Whitespace 1 gives a good idea as to how I developed number 2. I am under no illusion as to my graphic design skills, I am not great. But I will enter the contest to try and learn something from it.

Whitespace 1 : 99k. Whitespace 1 : 99k.

The closing date is this Friday, so I probably will make a few more, and then send them all to Paul in an email on thursday night (Since I have a wedding to attend on Friday). I am really looking forward to what other people submit, and I encourage you to give it a go if you have the time.

Update: I have added an image of what 'whitespace 2' would look like in place of Pauls current logo.

The Nature of Design

In my quest to become a better web developer - a ever ongoing task - I have become increasingly aware of the need to not only be a good programmer, but also, to improve upon my aesthetic faculties.

Nature can provide great creative inspiration Nature can provide great creative inspiration

It helps that I have always enjoyed art and design in general throughout my life. But, I have never had to do it for work, and it never been a big part of my job before now.

I am well aware that you can not be a 'guru' programmer, and a guru designer or graphic artist at the same time. So, since I seem to be enjoying the visual and front end side of things a bit more at the moment, I think I will focus on them for a while.

I can settle for just being 'good' at programming for now. I think.

Anyway, onto my point. On a mission to improve my understanding of visually pleasing things, I decided to try and gain inspiration in certain places, and to make a point of studying them. Such as a magazine, adverts, or a movie, maybe a tree. Yes, a tree.
