Finding the Images : Hate Crime
Every now and again we as web developers are called on to find suitable images for the sites we are developing. This may be because we are too impatient to wait for the client to deliver the image content, or because we just don't trust the client to deliver anything of a good standard. Or it could be, as my case is at the moment, we have been asked to find them ourselves.
For the purpose of finding good photographs I believe strongly in the use of stock art site. In particular I like stock.xchng (Currently down for maintenance - Was down for maintenance) since it is free and easy to sign up. I would of course love to have the time to organise my own photographs, and I hope one day to find a client that will allow me that sort of freedom. But that may be a distant dream.
So, with this entry I introduce a new topic; “Ask the Audience”. I plan on using this topic to throw all sorts of questions at you, my dear readers, and with the hope that we can all learn something from it. “To take ideas from one person is plagiarism; to them from many is research”.
As you may have guessed, this entry is going to ask you about how you find the images/photos that you need for your sites. How do you find them? And if you use a stock images site or company, who do you use?
I also have a more personal question. I am currently working on a redesign for a crime website. One of the main topics on the site is Hate Crime (Racism, and other forms or crimes based on bias opinions). I have been asked to find a suitable image to be featured on the front page of the site, for this topic. Needless to say, it is a very touchy topic, and I need to be careful with the image I use. It has to be a photograph, since I am using photo images for all the other topics. Can anyone suggest a good photo for this situation? If you know of a photo yourselves, that is great, but remember is must be royalty free. Otherwise, concepts will be very nice to hear also. I might need to stage the photo myself using some people from the office.
Thanks for any help.

I also like the idea of a backlit photo, so you only see the silhouettes of the people being pictured.
Pretty tough subject.

I have decided to go with a photo of a plaque in London in remembrance of Stephen Laurence, who was killed in an act of racism and hate crime. Most people in the UK will be able to recognise the name, and it couldn’t possibly offend anyone.
I have already placed it in the design (which I will let you know all about soon), and it looks ok. What does everyone thinkg of that concept?

I am not an affiliate, honest, hehe, but I guess all affiliates say that too :-)

Thanks Gordon
A search engine that is capable of conceptual searches. I love that idea, and I wonder why other stock photo sites haven't taken it up. Or maybe they have, and I don't know about it. I'm haven't got many stock photo sites that I know about, hence this entry I suppose.

Try Newspapers?
There is also http://www.gettyimages.com/
A brief search for the words "hate crime" shows up a few pictures I think you can use.
